A group of friends from Commack High School thought they were making a joke, but rape is never humorous.

The senior boys from Commack, NY, posted two images to Twitter. In the first, the boys each wore a letter on their shirts that together spelled out RAPE?

The second image shows that the shirts were changed to say RAPE. and a student with a gag and bound arms lay in front of the group.

A friend of the boys told ABC that the photos were meant to play off a joke in John Green's teen novel, The Fault In Our Stars.

He said,

"On the cover it says OK with a question mark, and then OK. underneath it with a period. And that's what they're using to defend themselves, but it's still pretty wrong."

The student body has been quick to denounce the boys' actions, speaking to media about its disappointment.

Ryan Elgar, a fellow Commack senior, says that the group simply made a poor decision.

According to Elgar,

"They're all great kids, some of them are athletes, good students It's just unfortunate, really."

Commack High School and its community did not appreciate the poorly chosen joke.

The school district may discipline the students. In a statement to the media, the district said that it deeply regret[s] damage caused by the image, which does not reflect the values of the student body or school.
