A young Colombian woman who believed an old wives tale paid the price.
The 22-year-old received medical attention after a potato germinated in her vagina
, causing temporary medical complications.
She told medical staff
that her mother had always told her spuds could be a method of contraception.
"My mum told me that if I didn't want to get pregnant, I should put a potato up there. I believed her."
The woman left the potato in her vagina for two weeks, when its roots began growing into her vaginal walls.
And while there was no need for surgery, the nurse who initially examined the woman was surprised to see roots emerging from her vagina
Experts also blame the country's "macho" culture for teenagers persistent disregard for the importance of contraception, which is often seen as weak or emasculating.
In September, the nation participated in Teenage Pregnancy Awareness month.
Of the nation's teenage girls, 20 percent have experienced or are currently pregnant, one of the highest numbers
of any Latin American country.
