Everyone laughed when Sacha Baron Cohen kidnapped Pamela Anderson to be his wife in the 2006 hit movie “Borat,” but how many viewers would have laughed if they had realized the custom of kidnapping women and forcing them into marriage is, for some, a reality?
A video recently surfaced
which depicts the real, horrifying tradition in Kazakhstan.
The footage, titled “Stealing The Bride,” shows a young girl being dragged to the home of her future husband. She’s screaming and crying, clearly being brought against her will.
Typically, the brides are blackmailed or payed into consenting and must wear a traditional handkerchief garment called an Oramal during the ceremony to display their consent.
It’s an incredibly backwards tradition but not uncommon in the patriarchal society, where over 60 percent of adults and 74 percent of teenagers either have been victims of the practice or know people who were.
Authorities are allegedly looking to ban the tradition.
