Animal rights activists Direct Action Everywhere staged a funeral for a frozen chicken in a California supermarket, complete with flowers, black clothing and a small casket.

In the video, a young man places the food in the casket before discussing how the animal had a “rich, emotional” life full of “desire” and “curiosity” that was cut short because it happened to be born a chicken instead of a human.

Fellow protestors shout, “It’s not food, it’s violence,” while giving their condolences as well. One even mimics Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech by expressing a vision that humans will one day see what we have in common with animals instead of what makes us different.

Customers and employees of the Berkeley store repeatedly try to disrupt the protest, most effectively at 5:10, when the deli staff begins chanting “Bacon, bacon, bacon…”

Security politely asks the protestors to leave many times, but it isn’t until the coffin is carried to the checkout area that police arrive and the protestors leave.
