NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A mother and her child were victims of a vicious assault in the Bronx last week, and police Monday night were searching for a suspect who kicked both of them to the ground in broad daylight.

As CBS2’s Andrea Grymes reported, the 2-month-old baby boy was resting safely in his mother’s arms Monday night. But three days earlier, police said both were random targets.

The crime was caught on camera. The husband and father of the victims saw the video for the first time Monday night.

Both parents asked CBS2 not to show their faces.

“I got scared,” the shaken mother said of what happened.

She said she had her son strapped to her chest as she walked home from the Laundromat around 12:45 p.m. this past Friday, when she was attacked in front of a building at 1155 E. Tremont Ave. just south of Bronx Park.

Police have identified Alonzo Brown, 18, as the suspect.

Police said the suspect walked past the 24-year-old woman and the child, then turned to follow her before running up and kicking her from behind. The woman and the baby fell to the ground, police said.

“I was holding my baby like this in front, and I felt something push me hard from the back, and I fell like this on my baby,” she said in Spanish.
The suspect took the woman’s cellphone and ran off down the block near Bronx Park Avenue, police said.
The mother said she got up, and a woman at a nearby store called 911.
The mother and the child were taken to Jacobi Medical Center, and were treated and released, police said. She was grateful they were both OK.
“Everything’s good,” she said. “My baby’s good and I’m good.”

She said she had never seen the suspect before.

Meanwhile, people in the neighborhood had no idea how the suspect could target a mother with her child.

“That’s not right. How are they going to push the lady with a baby?” said Gerardo Vazquez of the Bronx. “That’s not right.”

Investigators said suspect Brown has several arrests on his record, including criminal possession of a weapon.

Anyone with information was asked to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS, log onto the Crime Stoppers website, or text tips to 274637 (CRIMES) and enter TIP577.
