In Hawaii’s Waikele neighborhood, Christmas is a big deal.

Four years ago, local resident Keith Yoshida set out to spread holiday cheer by installing a festive light show on the facade of his tropical abode for Christmas, a tradition he’s been repeating every year since.

Last year, for the first time, three other households joined him in the over-the-top holiday decor. And this year, five more households joined in, making it the neighborhood’s largest collaborative light show yet.

The hour-long synchronized shows (there are four) include some 60,000 light fixtures and 14 holiday songs, which are all controlled wirelessly from Yoshida’s home.

The display, which will be put on nightly through Jan. 6, attracts thousands of mesmerized locals who want to join in on the holiday fun.
But the light shows offer more than just entertainment: Attendees have the opportunity to give back to the community, as well.

Yoshida explains,
We started a donation box, and every year the money that is donated is used to purchase toys, gift baskets and food for the Next Step Homeless Shelter.

Last year, the donations bought food and gifts for 50 families at the shelter; this year, the Hawaiian Humane Society will receive a portion of the donations, as well.

Still, the main draw is the collaborative light show. It’s unlike anything you’ve seen before, and the bar has officially been raised.

See the amazingly elaborate synchronized show in the video up top, and do your part as an audience member by donating to a local charity or shelter if you can.

‘Tis the season of giving, after all.
